A Whittier woman was arrested Sunday after leading Newport Beach police on a short car chase, barricading herself in a home, then fleeing on foot after warning police that she was armed.

Eryka Amber Arney, 19, was charged with burglary and attempted assault with a deadly weapon.

She is also wanted on narcotics charges in Los Angeles and Utah, said Sgt. David Szkaradek.

Arney was spotted by residents in the Dover Shores area of Newport Beach around 7:45 a.m., allegedly stealing UPS and FedEx packages that had been left outside homes.

When police arrived, she fled in a Toyota van reported stolen in Anaheim.

She led police on a short chase, then fled on foot at Mariners and Galaxy drives, Szkaradek said.

Arney broke into a Mariners Drive residence, he said. Police alerted the residents and they left.

She shouted to police that she was armed with a rifle.

Several minutes later, she jumped out of a second-floor window and ran up a hill toward Galaxy Drive.

She was captured in a backyard there with the weapon, a BB gun.

Police said they found stolen packages in the van.

Arney is being held at Orange County Jail.
