On an opening weekend in which Cal State Fullerton honored its three Golden Spikes award winners, the Titans left cleat marks all over Stanford.

Danny Dorn hit a three-run home run and Dustin Miller pitched six strong innings, and Fullerton completed a three-game sweep of the third-ranked Cardinal with an 8-2 victory in front of 2,238 on Sunday at Goodwin Field.

“They gave us a pretty good whipping,” said Coach Mark Marquess, whose team was swept in a series for the first time since April 1997.

“This is a very special way to start the season,” Coach George Horton said.

It was a big weekend for the 13th-ranked Titans, who received stellar play from several freshmen.

Dorn went three for four with four runs batted in to lead the Titans on Friday, 7-3.

In the Titans’ 10-2 win Saturday, pitcher Ryan Schreppel gave up one run in five innings. Miller and reliever Ricky Romero held Stanford to one run and five hits in the first eight innings Sunday.

Just as impressive was the record 8,194 in attendance for the three-game series. Saturday, Fullerton honored its former college players of the year, Tim Wallach, Phil Nevin and Mark Kotsay.

UCLA (2-1) scored 36 runs against Cal State Northridge, including 30 in consecutive victories to take the series. Chris Denove and Billy Susdorf combined for nine hits in 20 at-bats in two games. The Bruins won, 17-6, at UCLA on Saturday and, 13-8, at Northridge on Sunday.

Arizona State continued its strong play by winning the last two games of a series against Long Beach State (1-2) at Blair Field.

The eighth-ranked Sun Devils, who improved to 11-1, got a three-hit shutout by Jered Liebeck in a 3-0 win Saturday and used a two-run single by Dennis Wyrick and 6 2/3 strong innings by Erik Averill in a 4-2 victory Sunday.
