‘Red Thread’ sews up 7 nominations

“Red Thread,” Stephen Legawiec’s martial arts-infused drama set in ancient China and produced for Ziggurat Theatre at the little Gascon Center Theatre in Culver City, won seven nominations -- more than any other show -- for the annual Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards, the circle announced Monday.

The runner-up, with six nominations, was South Coast Repertory’s lavish production of Shaw’s “Major Barbara.”

Both productions are among four that are vying in the circle’s outstanding production category. The others are International City Theatre’s “Amy’s View” and the Road Theatre’s “Napoli Milionaria,” which was one of the top two winners in the fall’s Ovation Awards. Another Road production, the currently running “The Woman in Black,” won more nominations -- five -- than did “Napoli,” which garnered two.

Receiving three nominations each were productions of “Trainspotting,” “Side Show” and “La Gioconda.”

With two nods for “The Dazzle” in addition to the six for “Major Barbara,” South Coast received more nominations than any other company. Four Center Theatre Group productions won six nominations.

The awards will be announced March 10 in a ceremony at the Colony Theatre in Burbank. The circle’s 22 members write primarily for weekly publications and Web sites.
