They Will Open the Taps if Wallace Wins
Rusty Wallace and his sponsor, Miller Brewing Co., have said that if Wallace wins the Daytona 500, the brewery will give a six-pack of beer to every person at the race who can legally drink.
Friday, that became a pretty remote possibility. Wallace, who was supposed to start eighth, was disqualified from his fourth-place finish in Thursday’s qualifying race and must start 38th with a provisional. An unapproved carburetor was the reason. For his team’s transgression, Wallace was fined $10,000 and prize money of $28,720 was forfeited.
There’s another catch to the offer.
Because Budweiser has an exclusive contract to supply beer at Daytona International Speedway, the Miller people cannot give away their beer there, even if Wallace wins. Nor can they even give away coupons for a six-pack inside the track grounds.
“We’re going to hand out the coupons outside the track, off the France’s property,” said Marc Spiegel, Miller spokesman.
They will be redeemable only in Florida.
