Times Like These: Loosely based on the real-life tragedy of an Aryan matinee idol and his Jewish actress-wife crushed under the juggernaut of the Third Reich, Padua Playwrights Productions’ beautifully balanced drama by John O’Keefe, who also directs, reverberates with terror, humanity and hope. Laurie O’Brien plays Meta Wolff, while Norbert Weisser is Oskar Weiss, the star-crossed lovers whose cozy marital microcosm implodes with Hitler’s ascension to power. Set in Berlin in 1939, the story follows Meta’s pitiable progression from queen of German cafe society to a cowering, terrified prisoner in her own home.
