Radio host tunes out to relax with family, friends

Share

Her father is a rocket scientist, but she isn’t following in his footsteps. She’s doing her own thing: from the airwaves -- where she’s Rick Dees’ on-air sidekick -- to the pages of Playboy, as part of its celebrity layout. Monday through Friday she wakes before dawn, goes to work and does her job -- talking. But on the weekend ...

Caffeine powered

Because of the show, every weekday I have to get up at 3:30 a.m. The body never really gets used to it. But on the weekends, I try -- I like to sleep till my body wakes up. Then it’s time for coffee, French roast black. I love it. I can drink two pots of coffee. And I’ll go pull on my sweats. I love to live in my sweats. I kind of roll through the weekend wearing sweats.

It starts with a yoga session

Then I go to a power yoga class, either at Yoga Time or Yoga Village. I’ll do a 1 1/2-hour session. If it’s a nice day, I love to go to the Grove especially when there’s live music. I take my baby and my husband and we just sit out by the fountain and relax.

After that, we get something to eat. We might go to my favorite sushi bar, Matsuhisa, on La Cienega. I have my broiled miso cod; it’s so good. I think about it all the time. Next we’ll go to a movie at the Grove, ArcLight or at Universal CityWalk. I just saw “The Recruit.” Colin Farrell was great, and I’ve always been a big Al Pacino fan. Oh and before that, I saw “About Schmidt.” That’s my Oscar choice and of course, Jack was just great.

My body, at about 9 or 10 p.m., says it’s time to stop. We’ll go home, and I just sit in my jammies and just veg out in front of the TV. I usually fall asleep in front of the TV.

Sleeping in

Sunday mornings, since I never get to eat a leisurely breakfast during the week, we go out for breakfast. We’ll go to Patty’s on Riverside Drive. I usually get scrambled eggs with sliced tomatoes and, if I’m in the mood, I’ll add a little salsa. Sometimes we’ll eat at Hugo’s in West Hollywood. They’ve got this really interesting egg dish that I’ll have with whole wheat pancakes.

Now, I’m still wearing the same clothes from Friday night. I’m just totally comfortable and ready for anything. I might go for a run with my husband, or go to another yoga session. Sunday afternoon I love taking a nap and playing with my baby boy -- he’s the best entertainment. Sometimes we’ll just cuddle and watch the “Barney” video. So that’s all I really ever want to do on the weekend is to be with my little guy and my big guy.

The last round

But sometimes I’ll change up. Some British friends of ours do this thing where they rotate houses and they have Sunday dinner. They’re kind of formal, so I do dress up when I go to the dinners. We might have a home-cooked shepherd’s pie with great wine. That’s the perfect way to end the evening, eating by candlelight. And we just sit and talk.

The last one was at my house. It was a late drunken evening -- the guys were singing British pub songs. That night I got like one hour of sleep. That’s not the norm, but joining my friends makes L.A. seem kind of small and warm.
