Emanuel H. “Mannie” Fineman, chairman emeritus of the City of Hope National Medical Center board and a leading fund-raiser for the organization for nearly 60 years, has died. He was 90.

Fineman died Monday of cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

A native of Philadelphia, Fineman moved to the Los Angeles area when he was 17. He found work in the garment industry and, in 1936, became involved with the Merchants Club, a leading City of Hope auxiliary. After serving in the Army during World War II, Fineman founded Hollywood Casuals, a women’s sportswear manufacturing firm.

He was first elected to the City of Hope board in 1952 and three years later was named vice president. In 1964, he was elected chairman of the board of directors and was reelected in 1965, 1967 and 1969.

“Mannie helped shape City of Hope in a profound way,” said Gil N. Schwartz-berg, immediate past presi dent and chief executive of City of Hope. Schwartzberg said it was Fineman who helped form the industry support groups that are key to the organization’s fund-raising success.

In appreciation of his activities, City of Hope named a road after him on its Duarte campus.

Fineman is survived by his wife, Fran; sons Gary and Jay; daughters Vicki Binke, Robin Levy and Debra D’Veris; three grandchildren; and a sister, Reba Malamud.

The family suggests that donations be made to City of Hope Development Center, 1055 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90017.
