Nicole Ohlde sees no reason why Kansas State can’t stifle opponents this well in every game.

Kendra Wecker had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Ohlde scored 15, and No. 4 Kansas State held No. 24 Colorado to a school-record 15 points in the first half of a 61-36 victory Saturday at Manhattan, Kan.

“Overall, we wanted to crowd the lanes and play total team defense,” Ohlde said. “If we continue to play defense like that, we should be able to do that every day.”

Kansas State (15-1, 2-0 Big 12) never trailed and won its 10th straight game.

The Buffaloes (11-2, 1-1) made only 17% of their field-goal attempts in the first half, another school record. At halftime they trailed, 34-15.

“I don’t have a whole lot to say about it,” Colorado Coach Ceal Barry said. “We were getting nice shots. We were just short.”

The Buffaloes went on an 8-0 run early in the second half, cutting a 22-point deficit to 14. But Kansas State’s Amy Dutmer made a three-pointer with 15:17 left that sparked an 11-0 run and put Colorado away for good.

Megan Mahoney added 14 points for the Wildcats.Kate Fagan led Colorado with 10. The Wildcats held Colorado’s leading scorer, Tera Bjorklund (averaging 18 points) to six points.

“It was very pleasing to see our team play defense like that,” Kansas State Coach Deb Patterson said. “We’re understanding how important our defense is. That’s the statement tonight.”
