Find the Christmas spirit at home

Regarding “Germany’s Seasonal Glow” (Dec. 22): Susan Spano said she went to Germany to look for the “intense, openhearted joy” that comes during the holidays.
I suggest you stay home and make it yourself. My husband and I organize a neighborhood caroling party the week before Christmas and also invite family, friends and colleagues to a potluck Christmas breakfast. About 30 people come to each. We make fliers and phone calls, keep a list of people interested and produce caroling books. The Christmas magic comes from the carolers and the people we sing to.
The potluck breakfast is more relaxed because we’re warm and we don’t have to stay in key.
To me, getting together with friends and family is more rewarding than shopping.
