Havelid’s Goal Is a Surprise to Him

Defenseman Niclas Havelid didn’t know that he scored the winning goal in the Mighty Ducks’ 2-1 victory over St. Louis Sunday until nearly 30 minutes after the game.

“Really? I thought [Steve] Rucchin scored the goal,” said Havelid about his blue-line shot that deflected off the Blues’ Bryce Salvador into the goal at 14:05 of the third period. “I just tried to hit the net. I saw it go in, but I didn’t know what happened. It looked like [Rucchin] tipped in. But I’ll take it. It doesn’t matter who scored. It’s just good to see the puck in the net.”

For Havelid, who has made the most of his extra ice time on the Ducks’ power play, it was the eighth goal of the season and the fourth in a man-advantage situation.

“I’m learning to be a little patient and to take the shots when the puck’s there,” Havelid said.

“[Adam] Oates set [his goal] up for me and I just one-timed it.”

With center Andy McDonald sidelined for at least the next couple of games because of a concussion, Jason Krog continued to step up in his place.

Krog not only scored Sunday’s game-tying goal, but he also was a force in the faceoff circle, winning 11 out of 12 against the Blues.

“I’m not feeling so panicky out there, I’m feeling a little more relaxed,” said Krog, who has three goals in his last two games after scoring four in his first 55 NHL games. “I’m just able to play more of my game now.”

Center Marc Chouinard returned to the lineup after sitting out three games because of a neck strain and minor concussion for the Ducks.
