50,000 in Turkish Sector Rally for Unification
From Times Wire Reports
More than 50,000 Turkish Cypriots, many waving olive branches and European Union flags, rallied in northern Cyprus to push for reunifying the divided island, a sign of increasing pressure on the north’s president, Rauf R. Denktash, to accept a U.N. plan.
The plan gives the Greek Cypriot south and Turkish-allied north until Feb. 28 to settle their differences. The island has been split since 1974. The EU has invited Cyprus to join but says it will only take the Greek side if the island fails to reunite.
