Mexican ID Cards Are OKd for City Business
The City Council has voted to make Oxnard the first city in Ventura County to allow Mexican immigrants to use their country’s identification cards to do business at city offices.
The matricula consulars, as the cards are called, can be used in transactions such as opening a bank account or applying for a library card.
County supervisors unanimously agreed in October to adopt a similar resolution, saying it would make it easier for legal and illegal Mexican nationals residing in the county to obtain marriage certificates, business licenses and other services. Institutions such as Wells Fargo and Bank of America already accept the cards.
Mexican Consul Fernando Gamboa said his Oxnard office issues about 1,000 identification cards a week to immigrants in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
