Brendan Shanahan scored two goals in the third period as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche, 4-2, Thursday night at Denver in a rematch of last year’s Western Conference finals.

Detroit beat Colorado, 7-0, in Game 7 of the conference finals last season and the Avalanche lost this one on a somewhat embarrassing moment.

Colorado seemed to have the momentum after rallying from a two-goal deficit, but a mistake by Adam Foote allowed the Red Wings to win their third straight in the rivalry.

The Avalanche had already made a line change when Joe Sakic flipped the puck back to Foote near the door to Colorado’s bench.

Foote skated off and that allowed Shanahan to skate in and beat Patrick Roy with 7:18 left.

Shanahan finished with his 16th goal of the season, an empty-netter.

Minnesota 5, Vancouver 2 -- Pascal Dupuis recorded the first two-goal game of his career and Marian Gaborik had a goal and three assists to lead the Wild at St. Paul, Minn.

Dupuis’ second goal came with 8:33 left after Trent Klatt had pulled the Canucks within 3-2.

New York Islanders 3, St. Louis 2 -- Oleg Kvasha scored on a backhander with 3:01 left in overtime at St. Louis, and the Islanders rebounded from a 5-0 loss a night earlier to New Jersey.

Philadelphia 4, Montreal 1 -- Joe Sacco, playing in his first game with Philadelphia, scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period to help the host Flyers beat the Canadiens.
