An Arabian night, a California adventure

Resplendently adorned camels, dancing snake charmers, jugglers -- they all took the spotlight at the party after the premiere of “Disney’s Aladdin -- A Musical Spectacular” at Disney’s California Adventure. Held under a chiffon-swagged tent, it was a magic carpet ride of a celebration for guests ranging from opera superstar Placido Domingo -- a pal of the musical’s director, Francesca Zambello -- to “Hot Chick” movie headliner Rob Schneider.

Sipping bubbly from jewel-tone flutes, guests raved about the new 40-minute musical showcased in the park’s Hyperion Theatre. “ I was blown away by the flying carpet -- a marvelous effect,” said David Emmes, producing artistic director of nearby South Coast Repertory theater. “I hope this musical helps us develop a music public for the future,” said Domingo, artistic director of Los Angeles Opera. Before the curtain went up, Disney Chairman Michael Eisner presented composer Alan Menken with a gleaming magic lamp -- perched on a tasseled velvet pillow -- in appreciation for his score for the “Aladdin” film. “Receiving this gift from you is redundant,” Menken said.

Also on the Jan. 16 party scene at the Happiest Place on Earth: 90-year-old Art Linkletter, emcee of Disneyland’s opening-day ceremonies nearly 50 years ago and a close friend of Walt Disney. “Walt would have loved this,” said Linkletter, who attended the premiere with his wife, Lois. “I can still remember him making notes all those years ago when we were at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. He told me he wanted to have a park like that for the kids of America.”
