Attendance Gets a Boost From Interleague Play

Major League Baseball attendance went up 20% during interleague play, averaging 31,034 fans a game compared with 25,839 for other games.

On Saturday, interleague play attracted 620,083 fans for 16 games, the fourth-highest single-day total attendance in history. The highest one-day total was 640,412 set for 17 games on July 3, 1999.

The Angels drew 131,192 fans, the largest three-game total in Edison Field history, for three games against the Dodgers.

The New York Yankees put outfielder Bubba Trammell on the restricted list, one day after he unexpectedly left the club for unspecified personal reasons.

“There’s obviously something going on,” Manager Joe Torre said. “I just hope everybody’s healthy.”

Atlanta right-hander Paul Byrd will have reconstructive surgery on his pitching elbow today and will be out at leas until next season’s All-Star break.

Arizona activated closer Matt Mantei from the 15-day disabled list and designated reliever Ricky Bottalico for assignment.... St. Louis put catcher Joe Girardi on the 15-day disabled list and activated catcher Chris Widger.
