Armed Man Asking to See General Is Arrested
A man with a loaded handgun and a knife was arrested after he allegedly tried to get through the gate of MacDill Air Force Base while asking to see Gen. Tommy Franks.
Todd Christian Wiegler, 31, drove up to a base checkpoint and said he wanted to see Franks, who oversaw the war in Iraq, Tampa Police spokesman Joe Durkin said. Guards found the weapons, Durkin said.
Police arrested Wiegler on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm, a felony, and carrying a concealed knife, a misdemeanor, Durkin said.
Officials would not say whether Franks was at the base.
