Seems Like Old Times to Torre

Joe Torre hadn’t enjoyed filling out his lineup card so much in months. Looking at the box score was a special treat for New York’s manager too.

“That was nice,” he said with a smile.

David Wells pitched 7 2/3 strong innings Wednesday night to lead the suddenly healthy Yankees to a 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians at Cleveland.

The Yankees welcomed back Derek Jeter, Alfonso Soriano and Bernie Williams to their lineup. It was the first time the three stars had played together since May 21.

Jeter had a season-high four hits -- three off C.C. Sabathia (8-4) -- and two RBIs. Williams drove home two in his first game in six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.

Soriano had missed Tuesday night’s series opener with hand injuries.

“It felt great after [missing] 42 games and being out,” Williams said. “It felt good to be playing and getting some games under my belt before the All-Star break.”

Wells (11-3) took a shutout into the eighth before giving up two runs. He gave up nine hits, walked none and struck out one while improving to 7-0 on the road.

Boston 8, Toronto 7 -- David Ortiz hit a go-ahead double in the ninth inning at Toronto.

Manny Ramirez led off the ninth with a long fly to left-center, and left fielder Shannon Stewart nearly ran into center fielder Vernon Wells, who allowed the ball to tick off his glove for a triple. Ortiz followed with his double off Jeff Tam (0-4).

Baltimore 7, Seattle 2 -- Tony Batista hit a two-run homer and Rick Helling pitched six strong innings at Seattle.

The Orioles improved to 2-16 at Safeco Field. Helling’s road ERA of 7.88 in his first nine starts was the highest in the AL. This time, he was steady for five innings and escaped a sixth-inning jam with only one run allowed.

Texas 4, Minnesota 1 -- Alex Rodriguez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer and Joaquin Benoit pitched seven strong innings at Arlington, Texas.

Detroit 4, Chicago 2 -- Jeremy Bonderman won for the first time since May 4, and Warren Morris had three hits and scored twice at Detroit.

Detroit has won two straight and three of four, while Chicago has lost four of five.

The Tigers clinched only their second home series win of the year.

Oakland 6, Tampa Bay 3 -- David McCarty doubled twice and drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning at Oakland.
