Hawkish Faces Trial for Ed Burke Memorial

Hawkish, the upset winner of the Kindergarten Futurity on May 17, is among 54 2-year-olds competing in six trials tonight for the upcoming Ed Burke Memorial Futurity.

By virtue of his win at 7-1 odds in the Kindergarten, Hawkish, a son of Dash Thru Traffic, has taken one step toward qualifying for a $1-million bonus that goes to a horse that can sweep the Kindergarten, Ed Burke and, in December, the Los Alamitos Million Futurity. .

Owned by E G High Desert Farms and trained by Concepcion Balderrama, Hawkish will run in tonight’s third trial. The 10 fastest qualifiers will move on to the $400,000 final, which will be run July 26.

Metallic Lion, who has won four of five for trainer Paul Jones, is in the second trial. The son of Apollo should be favored against a field that includes four maidens. He was second in the Kindergarten.
