Quakes in the North Leave 246 Injured
Two earthquakes in northern Japan left 246 people with mostly minor injuries and damaged scores of houses. Officials said rail traffic in the area was halted and power was cut to tens of thousands of homes.
A magnitude 6.2 quake hit Miyagi prefecture, about 190 miles northeast of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said.
Most injuries were cuts and bruises, but two people were hospitalized with head injuries. Officials said about 120 homes were damaged, including 50 in the town of Nango.
Earlier, a magnitude 5.5 quake injured at least 17 people.
