Davis Recall Should Worry California’s Democrats

Share

Re “Recall Vote Set for Oct. 7,” July 25: The Democrats had better wake up fast if they don’t want to lose the governorship. If they are laboring under the illusion that only Republicans are disgusted with the governor’s job performance, then they are in for the political defeat of their lives. It’s not only right-wing conspirators making up that bunch of “sour grapes” rallying for Gov. Gray Davis’ ouster; included are a lot of Democrats sickened by the mess that he’s made of this state.

Now is not the time for partisan loyalty. Democrats need to realize they have to cut Davis loose. If they don’t act decisively and quickly, this state is in for some even bleaker days under the Republicans.

There’s a sensible solution to this nonsensical recall: Place Davis on the second part of the ballot. Otherwise, a voter who votes against the recall of Davis could legitimately claim disenfranchisement in the selection of the new governor. To do otherwise would allow further abuse of the recall process and contribute significantly to eroding citizen confidence in the electoral process.

I’m going to vote to recall Davis. I just pray there will be a qualified Democratic candidate to replace him. Don’t they understand that you don’t have to run against Davis to replace him as governor? You’d be running against the Republican candidates chomping at the bit.

Please, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), get into the race.

If Feinstein were governor and Leon Panetta, by appointment, replaced her in the Senate and the “Bengal tiger” (Davis) were released back into the jungle, then the Democratic Party would be in a much stronger position.

In the spirit of bad things getting worse, Standard & Poor’s has lowered California’s credit rating to BBB (July 25). And who can blame it? Of course, the Republicans deny that this very predictable pickle was brought about by their own inability to focus on anything other than yanking the gubernatorial chair out from under Davis so they can take a seat.

Who does Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista) think he’s kidding, putting up his own money to finance the recall campaign, while throwing the state budget another $30 million in debt to hold a special election? I say we forget about voting again and just throw all the campaign money right into California’s coffers. That ought to show Wall Street that we’re not as stupid as we look.
