Man Sentenced in Killing of Couple
A man convicted of stabbing to death an elderly couple who were friends with some of the city’s most prominent sports and political figures was sentenced Monday to two life terms without the possibility of parole.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert J. Perry also sentenced Stevie Bernard Jackson, 37, to a consecutive 35-year-to-life term for robbing another man a few days after the slayings.
A jury deliberated one day Friday before finding Jackson guilty of robbing and murdering his former landlords, Albert and Edna Patton, in their South Los Angeles home in May 2000. The verdict came after two earlier juries deadlocked on the charges.
Patton, 90, and his 85-year-old wife were well-known philanthropists in their modest neighborhood. Their home was filled with photos of the couple with such friends as Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Muhammad Ali, Stevie Wonder and the late Mayor Tom Bradley.
