$1 Million Pledged to Support Charter School

From Staff and Wire Reports

UC Davis Medical Center and a local real estate developer said they will each donate $500,000 to Sacramento High School as it prepares to reopen as a charter school this fall.

The medical center’s donation will be given over five years to buy equipment and develop the School of Health, one of six theme-based academies at the new school. Real estate developer Buzz Oates, a former Sacramento High student, made his gift in memory of friend and classmate Fred Anderson.

The school is reopening as a charter school this fall after it failed to improve student test scores two years in a row despite increased state funding. Former student and ex-basketball star Kevin Johnson’s St. HOPE Corp. will oversee the new charter.
