Not exactly in the country club

Writing material for his band the Cousin Lovers has never proved an insurmountable task for Tim Ferguson. Describing those songs, well

The L.A. quintet’s brand of bluejamaltgrassrock has earned it a loyal following for six years. Now that Ferguson’s churning out new songs, the Cousin Lovers remain impossible to pigeonhole. To wit: “It’s hard to say whether [the new material] is more country or less country,” he says. “Depends on what you’ve been listening to.” Fans can hear how they sound Monday night when Cousin Lovers drop in at the House of Blues, Sunset Strip.

Fast forward

Michael Penn, juggling movie and production work with getting started on his fifth album, performs at Largo on Tuesday and June 17.... Minibar’s second album, “Fly Below the Radar,” lands on Tuesday, and the band plays June 13 at the Troubadour. ... “My Fist / Your Face” is one of her tame songs -- that should give you an idea of what to expect when Pint Size plays Club Lingerie on Friday.
