Bonds Does His Share for Giants

Barry Bonds hit his 628th career homer and No. 15 of the season and also stole a base in the San Francisco Giants’ 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday at Pacific Bell Park.

The five-time MVP needs only two more stolen bases to become the first player to reach 500 homers and 500 stolen bases in his career.

Andres Galarraga, Jose Cruz Jr. and Marquis Grissom also homered and Jason Schmidt (5-2) pitched seven strong innings for the Giants, who improved to 8-3 on their season-long, 12-game home stand.

Bonds’ two-run homer in the eighth was followed by the 41-year-old Galarraga’s shot two batters later for his fourth homer of the season and No. 390 of his career.

Cruz drove the first pitch from Detroit starter Mike Maroth (1-11) in the second inning over the wall in left for his ninth homer of the season and first since May 9.

Baltimore 8, St. Louis 1 -- Deivi Cruz homered twice and Melvin Mora and Jeff Conine also homered for the Orioles, who ended a four-game losing streak while ending the Cardinals’ five-game winning streak.

The former city rivals wore old-style jerseys -- with the Orioles donning St. Louis Browns uniforms -- to commemorate the only all-St. Louis World Series in 1944. The Browns left to become the Baltimore Orioles after the 1953 season.

Sidney Ponson (8-3) gave up seven hits, struck out eight and walked two for his 20th complete game and second this season. He threw an eight-hitter in beating the Angels, 12-4, on May 27.

Houston 5, Tampa Bay 4 -- Jeff Kent and Richard Hidalgo hit solo home runs in the eighth inning at Houston, giving the Astros sixth consecutive victory.

Kent tied the score with his 10th home run, connecting with one out off former Angel Al Levine (2-3). Hidalgo hit his eighth homer with two outs off Levine.

Kirk Saarloos (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth. Billy Wagner got his 18th save in 19 chances and tied Dave Smith for the franchise lead in career saves with 199.

Arizona 5, Cleveland 3 -- Shea Hillenbrand hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, rallying the Diamondbacks over the Indians and former teammate Brian Anderson at Phoenix.

Anderson (3-6), who pitched five seasons for the Diamondbacks, gave up four runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Junior Spivey drove in the final run with an RBI double off Terry Mulholland in the seventh inning, ending a string of 31 consecutive innings without an earned run by the Cleveland bullpen.

Montreal 5, Texas 4 -- Brad Wilkerson took advantage of the short fences at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to homer twice as the Expos handed the Rangers their eighth consecutive loss.

Jose Vidro also homered for Montreal, a legitimate shot off the advertisements beyond the right-field bleachers, as the Expos won their third game in a row.

There have been 60 homers in 15 games this season at Hiram Bithorn Stadium.

Cincinnati 9, Toronto 8 -- Jason LaRue tied the score with a three-run homer and Sean Casey hit an RBI single as the Reds once again rallied in the ninth inning.

The Reds trailed, 8-5, going into the bottom of the ninth, but came back against Cliff Politte (1-4). Of their 30 wins this season, 16 have come in their final at-bat. This was their eighth walkoff win.

Aaron Boone opened the ninth with a single, Russell Branyan walked and LaRue homered. With one out, Rainer Olmedo singled, Adam Dunn -- who earlier hit his major league-leading 20th homer -- walked and Casey singled.

Boston 11, Milwaukee 10 -- Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek hit consecutive homers off Mike DeJean in the ninth inning for the Red Sox, who came back from a couple of six-run deficits at Milwaukee.

Boston won for only the fourth time in 12 games and moved within a half-game of the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Kevin Millar, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz and Bill Mueller also homered as the Red Sox capped their biggest comeback win of the season. They have won 10 times when trailing after six innings, but had been 0-24 when behind after eight.

Kansas City 13-9, Colorado 11-5 -- Mike Sweeney hit a two-run double to help the Royals complete their first doubleheader sweep on the road in 12 years.

Sweeney’s grand slam carried the Royals to a win in the opener. He finished with four hits and six RBIs on the day.

The Royals had 30 hits in the two games for their first doubleheader sweep away from home since Aug. 13, 1991, at Yankee Stadium.

Minnesota 6, San Diego 2 -- Jacque Jones hit two home runs, including the 20th of his career to lead off a game, to lead the Twins at San Diego.

Jones, who holds the club record for leadoff homers, hit his fourth of the season off Carlton Loewer. He added a solo shot -- his eighth of the season -- in the third, also off Loewer.

Seattle at New York Mets -- The Mets were rained out for the third time in five days. The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader today. The Mets also were rained out against Milwaukee on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Oakland at Philadelphia -- The game was postponed because of rain. It will be played as part of a doubleheader today.

Tom Glavine is likely to miss a start for the first time in his major league career. Bothered by a bone spur in his left elbow, he says he is “iffy at best” for his next turn for the Mets on Wednesday.
