Mariners Take Care of Business

Ichiro Suzuki started the day with a single, stole two bases and scored, and the Seattle Mariners kept going in the right direction all afternoon at New York’s Shea Stadium.

Jamie Moyer became the major leagues’ first 10-game winner and the Mariners defeated the Mets, 7-0, Sunday to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Suzuki got four hits in the first game, in which the Mariners took a 12-run lead and routed the Mets, 13-1, behind Freddy Garcia’s six-hitter.

Seattle set a club record for victories on a trip, finishing 11-1 after stops at Kansas City, Minnesota, Philadelphia and New York. The club was 10-0 in April 2002.

The Mariners improved to 17-0 in day games this season. They outscored the Mets, 20-1, and outhit them, 31-9.

Philadelphia 7-8, Oakland 1-3 -- Jim Thome and Bobby Abreu each homered and drove in two runs, and the Phillies completed a doubleheader sweep at Philadelphia.

Kevin Millwood pitched seven strong innings in the first game and Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer to help the Phillies end a four-game losing streak.

Randy Wolf pitched seven innings in the second game to help Philadelphia completed its longest home stand this with a 6-6 record. The Athletics finished 5-7 on their trip.

San Francisco 7, Detroit 6 -- Pinch-hitter Edgardo Alfonzo had a tiebreaking double with two out in the eighth inning to give the host Giants a sweep of the three-game series.

The National League West-leading Giants wrapped up their season-long 12-game home stand with a 9-3 record. They begin a two-week trip Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox, who won two of three against the Dodgers during the weekend.

Boston 9, Milwaukee 1 -- Kevin Millar homered twice and drove in four runs, backing a strong outing by Derek Lowe at Milwaukee.

Millar, who had a pinch-hit grand slam to help Boston rally from two six-run deficits in Saturday night’s 11-10 victory, batted .387 (12 for 31) and the Red Sox finished 5-7 on their trip.

Lowe (6-3), who was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning because of a blister on his right thumb, gave up five hits, struck out five and walked one. He faced only 22 batters in six innings.

Montreal 3, Texas 2 -- Brad Wilkerson’s second run-scoring double ended a tie in the eighth inning and helped send the Rangers to their ninth straight loss. The Expos finished their second home stand at San Juan, Puerto Rico, with four consecutive victories.

The Expos are 10-6 in their first two trips to San Juan, where their average attendance is 14,216, up from 11,338 in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium. Their last six games in Puerto Rico are in September.

San Diego 9, Minnesota 4 -- Mark Loretta had four hits, including a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning at San Diego and the Padres ended the Twins’ three-game winning streak.

Ryan Klesko and Brian Buchanan each hit a two-run homer to complete a six-run outburst in the eighth against LaTroy Hawkins (4-1) and Mike Nakamura.

Arizona 13, Cleveland 3 -- Robby Hammock had four hits, including two triples that tied a club record, and drove in three runs at Phoenix. The Diamondbacks, who have won four of six, had a season-high 18 hits, including 11 for extra bases, and scored their most runs since scoring 17 against Colorado on Sept. 28.

Toronto 5, Cincinnati 0 -- Kelvim Escobar pitched a four-hitter for the third shutout of his career and drove in a run with his first hit, leading the Blue Jays to a rain-delayed game at Cincinnati. Escobar (3-3), who lost his job as the Blue Jays’ closer last month, gave up two doubles and two singles. He struck out a season-high seven and walked one.

Houston 2, Tampa Bay 1 -- Tim Redding (4-4) combined with two relievers on a three-hitter at Houston and the Astros won their seventh in a row, matching their longest winning streak this season. Redding gave up one run and two hits in seven innings, retiring the final 18 batters he faced.

Octavio Dotel pitched the eighth and Billy Wagner finished with a one-hit ninth for his team-record 200th save, one more than Dave Smith’s previous mark.

St. Louis 11, Baltimore 10 -- Scott Rolen hit a tiebreaking grand slam and Jim Edmonds drove in three runs with two homers at St. Louis. Rolen was four for five, the fifth four-hit game of his career, and St. Louis had 18 hits. Rolen’s single in the third inning was the 1,000th hit of his career.

The Cardinals, who have won six of seven, won two of three in the first series between the former city rivals. The St. Louis Browns left to become the Orioles after the 1953 season.

Colorado 8, Kansas City 7 -- Chris Stynes drove in three runs and Larry Walker and Charles Johnson each had two runs batted in, and the Rockies averted a three-game sweep at Denver. Scott Elarton (3-1) won his third consecutive start for the first time since Aug. 16-27, 2000.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Atlanta 6, Pittsburgh 5 -- Javy Lopez hit two home runs at Atlanta -- giving him four in two days -- and the Braves extended their winning streak to five games.

Atlanta also matched the best 61-game start in franchise history at 42-19. Andruw Jones and Rafael Furcal also homered for Atlanta, which leads the majors with 98.
