From Times Wire Reports

Four decades after Prince Edward County closed its public schools rather than obey orders to integrate, about 400 black students who were denied an education received honorary diplomas.

Black students were forced from their classrooms from 1959 to 1964 when the county closed its public schools rather than obey an order to integrate.

A private school was established for whites, while many black children never returned to school. Others went elsewhere.
