Daltrey on Bowl’s who’s who list

When the Hollywood Bowl kicks off its season Friday, it will be with a little bit of Broadway, a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll.

Roger Daltrey, Patti LuPone and the Smothers Brothers will share the stage as inductees at the Fourth Annual Hollywood Bowl of Fame Gala. The evening, led by Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conductor John Mauceri, will also include tributes to Tony Award-winning actor Nathan Lane and conductor Leopold Stokowski, who founded the Hollywood Bowl’s 1940s symphony orchestra, and a performance by tenor Josh Groban. The event will benefit Music Matters -- the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s music education program.

“What we try to do is honor people who have made a significant contribution not only to the Bowl but to music in general,” said Steven Linder, manager of artistic planning.

In fact, Daltrey, who rose to fame as the front man of the rock band the Who, will return to the stage later this season to play Alfred P. Doolittle in a production of “My Fair Lady” that also will feature John Lithgow and Melissa Errico.

The schedule for the current season is more diverse than in years past, Linder said. Brazilian singer-guitarist Joao Gilberto will return to the Bowl on July 23 for the first time in almost four decades. The jazz program also includes “The Movie Music of Spike Lee & Terence Blanchard” on July 30 and “The Art of Swing,” a performance by the Oscar Peterson Quartet with Dianne Reeves (the Philharmonic Assn.’s creative chair for jazz) on Aug. 27.

The World Program includes “Global Divas IV” with Cesaria Evora and Morcheeba on June 29 and the club DJ Paul Oakenfold and Jason Bentley of KCRW hosting an electronic music party July 6. On Aug. 10, Tom Schnabel will host “Sounds of Brazil,” featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma along with other artists.

Also this year, all three resident conductors of the L.A. Philharmonic are scheduled to appear at the Bowl. Esa-Pekka Salonen will be on the podium July 22 and 24 and Aug. 5 and 7, previewing material for the Philharmonic’s upcoming residency at the Edinburgh Festival.

Miguel Harth-Bedoya will conduct an evening of music about America on Sept. 4 and “Tango Passion” on Sept. 5 and 6. Yasuo Shinozaki will conduct “Masterworks” on Sept. 2 and “A Titanic Symphony” on Sept. 9.

On Aug. 19 and 21, the Philharmonic will perform two different takes on the four seasons -- Vivaldi’s masterwork and Mark O’Connor’s “American Seasons” -- with JoAnn Falleta conducting both nights. While the Philharmonic takes up its residency at Edinburgh, Jeffrey Kahane will lead the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in a Beethoven “Mini-Marathon” -- all five piano concertos.

In addition, on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Salonen will return to conduct Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

“It’s an affirming message of humanism,” said Philharmonic Executive Director Deborah Borda, “a monument to the idea that all men are brothers. It seemed very significant in terms of marking the day. It doesn’t dwell on the tragedy but what we can do. It just seemed like the perfect piece.”

James Brown will close the season Sept. 27.
