‘Flower Drum’ replaced in O.C.

The Sept. 29-Oct. 5 engagement of “Flower Drum Song” at Orange County Performing Arts Center has been canceled, to be replaced by a touring company of “Chicago,” Aug. 26-31.

The official international tour of “Flower Drum Song” was recently called off, primarily because the specter of SARS resulted in the cancellation of engagements in Singapore, Manila and Hong Kong, as well as anticipated stops in China, said producer Benjamin Mordecai. Without the Asian performances, the entire tour -- which would have stopped at eight cities in the United States -- “wasn’t economically viable,” Mordecai said.

However, Dallas Summer Musicals, which provided some of the money for the revised revival of the musical, is planning to mount its own production, elements of which are expected to be used for additional productions in Seattle and Sacramento.

A spokesman for L.A.’s Ahmanson Theatre, where a Sept. 16-28 run of “Flower Drum Song” was announced, said a decision on whether the Ahmanson will mount its own production won’t be made until next week.
