A Diamond Bar congressman has introduced legislation that would allow the Orange County Transportation Authority to buy 46 express buses to travel the heavily congested Riverside and Orange freeways.

Republican Rep. Gary Miller said his bill (HR 1150) would improve bus service from Riverside, Corona and Industry to the Anaheim resort district, South Coast Plaza and UC Irvine.

If funding is approved, the buses would depart every 30 minutes during weekday rush hours from park-and-ride facilities in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

OCTA officials said the coaches would use carpool lanes on the Orange Freeway and the 91 Express Lanes, the tollway in the median of the Riverside Freeway.

The buses would cost about $23 million, which would be split among federal and local agencies.
