The quiet life is good in the ‘live zone’ on the beach

When he plays Johnny in the TV series “Dead Zone,” he finds himself in possession of amazing psychic powers that allow him to see into the lives of anyone he touches. Turnabout is fair play, and the quiet actor has allowed a view of his leisure routine.
On the beach
About nine years ago, I came out from New York -- I’m originally from Boston -- to live in Southern California. I lived in Hollywood for a while, then I met Dr. Jerry Buss through some friends, he and I became friends, He lives in Playa del Rey and introduced me to the area. Now I’ve got a home nestled right on the beach. There’s always something to do.
He’s got Denzel
On a Friday night I might stay in and watch a DVD. I’ve just been watching “Thug Immortal.” And I like to study actors that I admire. So I’ve been watching “The Hustler” with Paul Newman and Denzel Washington in “He Got Game.” Of course I like to see movies on the big screen too. It’s always interesting to look at different filmmakers to see what they’re doing. I recently saw “The 25th Hour.” I like that, and another movie that I really liked: “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.”
Walking the dog
Sometimes I do a light workout, just to stay toned. But I really like to walk. I always have to take my dog out for a walk. He’s a bull mastiff named Rey.
Then my wife and I might go out and walk along the boardwalk. The boardwalk is always fun. And we take sunset strolls. It’s very romantic. We’ve got a really good quality of life here. The marina is not like Santa Monica or Venice, it’s kind of a quiet, low-key beach.
Saturday night we might go for a drive to Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach. If we go to dinner, we go to La Marina in Playa. They’ve got this bleu cheese steak that’s really delicious. I like California Pizza Kitchen, too, and Chicago for Ribs in Westchester on Lincoln.
Serene Sunday
I’m a Catholic, so I go to Mass on Sunday. After the service, we’ll usually head back to the beach or take a little drive. We may shop at the marina mall.
Or maybe I’ll go music shopping. If I’m in Hollywood, I’ll dip into Tower on Sunset or Virgin Records. But I have a studio in the house too. I’m a musician -- I play bass, drums and guitar.
One-two punch
If I go out to eat, it may be to Moonshadows in Malibu. The food is good and they have this deck with a counter and you’re literally sitting right on top of the water.
Then the one-two punch is a walk around the Lake Shrine off Sunset Boulevard and PCH. It’s beautiful. There’s a botanical garden and a man-made lake, and people come there to meditate. That’s good for me, just exhale and chill out. I don’t really do the Hollywood party thing. Some people party every night, but years ago I figured out that people who are getting ahead are getting it done before 6 p.m.
