Businessman Convicted of False Tax Filing
From Staff and Wire Reports
A federal jury has convicted a Fresno businessman of filing false tax returns and lying on bank loan applications.
Hagop “Jack” Vartanian was indicted two years ago by a federal grand jury investigating allegations of point-shaving by the 1996-97 Fresno State men’s basketball team.
The grand jury issued no indictments in connection with point-shaving, but Vartanian and businessman Dror Geron were charged with income tax violations. Vartanian’s lawyer said Wednesday that he would ask for a new trial.
