Cold Spell Sends San Diego State to NIT Loss at Texas Tech

After San Diego State closed to within one point in the final seven minutes, the Aztecs went scoreless for nearly five minutes and lost to Texas Tech, 57-48, in the second round of NIT Friday night at Lubbock, Texas.

After Texas Tech (20-12) built a 14-point first-half lead, San Diego State pulled to within one at 46-45 with 6:41 remaining. The Aztecs (16-14) had a chance to take the lead but Tony Bland missed a layup with 6:14 left after he stole the ball from Kasib Powell and took it the length of the court.

San Diego State then hit its cold spell, which didn’t break until Evan Burns made a three-point basket with 1:47 remaining.

Robert Tomaszek scored 14 points and Andre Emmett, the Big 12’s leading scorer with a 22.1 average, had only nine points for Texas Tech, which will play Wednesday against the Iowa-Georgia Tech winner.

Deandre Moore scored 11 points and Mike Mackell added 10 for San Diego State.

Iowa 54, Iowa State 53 -- Brody Boyd’s free throw with 21 seconds was the difference for the Hawkeyes (17-13) at Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones (17-14) had two chances to go ahead in the final seconds, but Tim Barnes missed a short shot outside the lane and a desperation jumper at the buzzer. Iowa will play host to Georgia Tech (15-14) on Monday.

Temple 75, Boston College 62 -- David Hawkins scored 21 of his career-high 36 points in the second half as the Owls (17-15) turned back the Eagles (19-12) at Philadelphia. Temple plays Rhode Island (20-10) in the second round Tuesday.

WOMEN’S NAIA TOURNAMENT

Vanguard 70, Transylvania, Ky. 54 -- Robbin Dittenbir had 20 points and 13 rebounds to help Vanguard (27-9) win at Jackson, Tenn. and advance to today’s quarterfinals against Oklahoma Christian (21-11). Transylvania finishes 23-5.

Point Loma Nazarene 75, Houston Baptist 68 -- Zaneta Drungilaite scored 23 points, making all nine of her shots from the field, and Jessica Mercado had 22 points for Point Loma Nazarene (26-8), which upset third-seeded Houston Baptist (33-4) and advanced to the quarterfinals against Southern Nazarene, Okla. (26-9).

Science and Arts, Okla. 52, The Master’s 51 -- The Master’s (25-8) pulled within one at 52-51 on two free throws by Kelly DeVries, but didn’t score again, turning the ball over with 44 seconds left then failing to get a shot off in the final 12 seconds on its final possession.
