Support for War Increases to 50%

The number of Australians supporting the U.S.-led war against Iraq outweighs opponents for the first time, according to a poll released today.

The Newspoll survey of 1,200 people for The Australian newspaper found support for military action rose to 50% from 45%, with more backing from women, younger people and opposition supporters.

The percentage of people opposing Australia’s involvement in the war fell to 42% from 47% in a similar poll conducted on the eve of the conflict. Australia has 2,000 military personnel in the Persian Gulf.
