It’s Going to Be a Night for the Youngsters

Those looking for older quarter horses, Arabians or thoroughbreds tonight are out of luck.

The card at Los Alamitos is devoted to 2-year-olds trying to qualify for the $400,000 Kindergarten Futurity, which will be run in two weeks.

Ninety-three youngsters will try to earn their way into the finals in 11 300-yard trials. The 10 fastest qualifiers will move onto the Grade I.

The fourth trial will feature the debut of the highly regarded A Very Kool Chick. Owned by Lucas Racing Inc. and trained by Donna McArthur, the daughter of Chicks Beduino is the first foal of the champion mare Corona Kool. She has trained well for her bow and will break from Post 8 under jockey Sam Thompson.

Four! Use A Summer Time Gal, Wired To Fly, Sometimes You Win and Commander Corona in the first, Laico Cartel and Royal Sassy Mary in the second, Pencilmein, Beyond Brilliant and Hawkish in the third and single A Very Kool Chick in the fourth.

Shots in the dark: Youdontknowtac gets a jockey switch to Joe Badilla Jr. in the fifth. Holland Smith lost his best chance at the break in his debut and could go better in the eighth.
