A consumer’s guide to the best and worst of sports media and merchandise. Ground rules: If it can be read, heard, observed, viewed, dialed or downloaded, it’s in play here.

What: “The 30-Second Golf Swing.”

Author: T.J. Tomasi.

Publisher: HarperCollins.

Price: $13.95 (Paperback).

There are no swing mechanics in this 223-page book. No tips on posture or grip, precious little about balance, and nothing on how to cure a hook or slice.

That’s not to say that author T.J. Tomasi, a respected teaching pro, doesn’t care about mechanics. He has written about mechanics in some of his other 11 books, most notably “The Laws of the Golf Swing.”

This book is designed to help golfers mentally prepare to hit the ball. A swing takes less than two seconds. The key to success is what takes place in the approximately 28 seconds before the swing.

According to Tomasi, a swing should begin three or four strides behind the ball, by looking down the target line and focusing on where you want the ball to go.

The several hours it takes to read “The 30-Second Swing,” which Tomasi co-wrote with former Golf Magazine instruction editor Kathryn Maloney, should be time well spent. It will train your brain on what to do in the 30 seconds or so it takes to plan, evaluate and execute a golf shot.
