City Seeks to Enforce Homeless Measure
City officials will appeal a judge’s ruling to throw out the “Care Not Cash” homeless initiative city voters approved in November, City Atty. Dennis Herrera said Friday.
The initiative cuts cash payments to the homeless and instead gives them shelter and food. A San Francisco Superior Court judge invalidated the ballot measure this week, ruling that only the city’s elected supervisors can decide how much local aid indigent residents receive.
In November, 60% of San Francisco’s electorate voted in favor of Proposition N, which would reduce the monthly cash allowances that about 3,300 homeless people receive. The estimated $13.2 million in savings would be redirected toward treatment programs and shelter beds.
The measure was scheduled to take effect July 1.
