It Could Get a Little Wacky

Share

Less than two weeks after winning her debut, Wacky Patty will try to win the first 2-year-old stakes of 2003 on the Southern California calendar today at Hollywood Park.

Owned and trained by Jim Chapman, the Formal Dinner filly will have eight opponents in the $75,000-added Nursery at five furlongs.

In her debut on April 30, Wacky Patty, who was purchased last year in Florida for $16,000, broke from the rail, quickly made the lead under jockey Corey Nakatani, then drew clear in the stretch to win by 2 1/2 lengths in 51 3/5 seconds for the 4 1/2 furlongs.

Nakatani is back aboard today and Wacky Patty again will leave from the inside post as one of only two starters in the Nursery with a victory beyond two furlongs. The other is Astra’s Sister, who beat $40,000 maidens by six lengths on April 24. Martin Pedroza has the mount on the daughter of Candi’s Gold. Car Lady, a Distinctive Cat filly owned by Bill Aubrey and trained by Jose Corrales, was arguably the most impressive two-furlong winner of the Santa Anita meet. Despite veering at the break, she won by two lengths in 21 3/5. Alex Solis will ride today and she will be a first-time Lasix user.

Race of the day: Carson Hollow, a winner of six of nine, leads a field of five in the $150,000 Genuine Risk at Belmont Park. A Grade II at six furlongs, the Genuine Risk also lured Harmony Lodge, Shine Again, September Secret and A New Twist. September Secret is trained by Southern California-based Mike Machowsky

One for the road: Navesink returns to his favorite turf course in today’s seventh at Belmont Park. The 5-year-old Irish River horse has two victories and two thirds in five races over the Belmont turf.

Exotically speaking: A pick all using Fancy Beginning and Papier Mache in the first, Ace’s Valentine and Stealing Memories in the second, American Saga and Cat Fighter in the third, single Xtrasensory in the fourth, Strategic Move in the fifth, Artist’s Studio in the sixth, Asong For Billy in the seventh, Quero Quero in the eighth and Wacky Patty and Car Lady in the ninth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 0/34. Money: Previous day/meet total: $0/$182.20. Total money bet: $242.
