Film to Be Screened on Anti-Hitler Theologian
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian who participated in plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler, is the subject of a new documentary to be screened this weekend at two Los Angeles churches.
Produced by Journey Films with grants from the Lilly Endowment and Catholic Communication Campaign, the 90-minute documentary features interviews with Bonhoeffer’s relatives and students, along with footage from the Nazi era. It draws on Bonhoeffer’s own writings as a Christian theologian who, despite his pacifist convictions, joined in plots to take Hitler’s life in order to challenge evil.
In the process, he confronted the church’s silence, as well as his inner conflict between remaining safely in America teaching theology or returning to Germany and his eventual death. Only days before the war ended, Bonhoeffer was hanged by the Nazis.
A discussion with producer Martin Doblmeier and others will follow each screening.
It will be shown at 8 p.m. today at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Blvd.; and at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, 725 California Ave., Santa Monica. Admission is $10 at each church.
