U.S. national team star Landon Donovan scored in the 87th minute to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 4-3 Major League Soccer victory over the Columbus Crew in front of 7,180 at San Jose on Saturday night.
Donovan’s goal from inside the six-yard box put San Jose ahead, 4-2, and appeared to serve only as insurance at the time.
Brian Mullan, Brian Ching and Jeff Agoos also scored for San Jose (4-0-2), with Agoos giving the Earthquakes a 3-2 lead in the 67th minute.
Brian McBride, Donovan’s U.S. teammate, Jeff Cunningham and Ross Paule scored for Columbus (3-2-2).
Paule’s goal came in the 90th minute.
New York/New Jersey 2, Colorado 0 -- Clint Mathis scored the winning goal past the outstretched arms of diving goalkeeper Scott Garlick, leading the MetroStars (4-1-1) over the Rapids (0-4-1) in front of 8,442 at Denver.
It was Mathis’ third goal in three games. Mathis, the second-leading scorer in franchise history, is one goal shy of his total for all of 2002, when he was limited to 14 games because of a knee injury and by playing in the World Cup.
Mathis has scored in three consecutive games and the MetroStars are 20-0-2 when he scores.
New England 3, Chicago 0 -- Taylor Twellman scored his fifth goal of the season, and Adin Brown made seven saves as the Revolution (3-2-2) defeated the Fire (1-1-3) in front of 10,086 at Foxboro, Mass.
Twellman opened the scoring in the 18th minute, heading in the rebound of a shot by Joe-Max Moore. Jay Heaps and Steve Ralston scored the other New England goals.
Kansas City 1, Washington 1 -- Marco Etcheverry’s ended D.C. United’s scoreless streak at 313 minutes and helped it earn a tie with the visiting Wizards (2-1-4) in front of 21,859 at Washington. D.C. United is now 0-2-4. Preki scored Kansas City’s goal in the sixth minute.
