Justice Dept. Official Gets Panel’s OK for Judgeship
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Michael Chertoff’s nomination to an appeals court Thursday.
Chertoff, the head of the criminal division at the Justice Department and a former federal prosecutor, was nominated to a seat on the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals.
Although the Judiciary Committee has been the setting for several fierce battles over President Bush’s nominees in recent months, the Chertoff nomination hasn’t been one of those fights.
The Senate, meanwhile, approved the nomination of Consuelo M. Callahan to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on a 99-0 vote. Callahan, who was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 8, is a state appellate judge in Sacramento.
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals handles appeals from federal trial courts in California, Oregon, Arizona, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii and Washington state.
