Residential water rates may be raised in the next year to pay for improving water quality, city officials said Friday.

The Department of Water and Power told a City Council panel that the costs of making sure water is safe are rising. The DWP may consider increasing the water quality surcharge, which is about $3 a month. Officials did not say what the possible increase would be.
