Glenn Nagel, 59; Biochemist, Professor at 2 Cal State Schools

Glenn M. Nagel, 59, dean of natural sciences and mathematics at Cal State Long Beach, died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Fullerton.

Born in Blue Island, Ill., Nagel earned a bachelor’s degree from Knox College and a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Illinois Medical Center.

After post-doctoral studies at UC Berkeley, he joined the faculty of Cal State Fullerton in 1972, and in 1977 became chairman of its department of chemistry and biochemistry. In 1987, he was cited as the campus’ outstanding professor.

Nagel moved to Cal State Long Beach in 1996 as dean of its natural sciences and mathematics department. He was an expert on the structure and function of various proteins, and wrote widely on biochemistry topics. He was honored by the National Institutes of Health among others.

The biochemist was also recognized for his contributions to education. He was active in the Long Beach Education Partnership, which provides a model for education in kindergarten through high school facilities.
