When the Angels return to Edison Field, center fielder Darin Erstad hopes to make his long-awaited return to the lineup.

Erstad, out five weeks because of a hamstring injury, said Tuesday he hopes to complete a minor league rehabilitation assignment next week and rejoin the Angels when their next home stand opens June 9.

The Angels won’t commit to any timetable until they evaluate a workout scheduled today and how he recovers from it. Although Erstad has been hitting regularly, he expects to need five to seven days in the minors to get his right leg -- and cranky hamstring -- back in game shape.

“It’s just so weak,” he said. “I haven’t used it for five weeks. I have to build it up so I don’t blow it out by coming back too fast.

“We have a lot of baseball left. The last thing you want to do is come back too quickly and have a setback. You want to come back so you’re back for good.”
