A veteran of the Soviet war in Afghanistan was convicted of a bombing that killed 14 people, even though he had been acquitted in an earlier trial, Russian news reports said.

Mikhail Smurov was sentenced to 14 years in jail for the 1996 blast at a graveside memorial for the head of a fund for disabled veterans. The blast allegedly stemmed from a feud between two veterans groups over tax exemptions for the import and export of consumer goods.
