‘The Amazing Race’ is off and running tonight

Adventure-reality fans caught in “Survivor” limbo can thank CBS for a savvy programming move that may finally get “The Amazing Race” the ratings numbers it deserves.

“Race,” which pits a dozen broadly varied two-person teams in a globe-trotting quest for the $1-million grand prize, begins its fourth edition tonight in “Survivor’s” plum 8 p.m. time slot. The special 90-minute premiere enables those new to the show to get off and running with the fast-paced format as well as providing a revealing introduction to the contestants.

Dodger Stadium serves as the starting point for the new competition, with Milan, Italy, first stop on the agenda. The race has 13 legs and nine pit stops, with clues to the next destination distributed along the way. The last team to arrive at each of the pit stops is eliminated, but the treat for viewers is in the getting there.

The pairs include bickering husband and wife Chris and Amanda, gay marrieds Reichen and Chip, and a long-dating couple who describe themselves as virgins. Two female models believe they have the edge, however.

“Girls have it easier than men in a lot of situations,” explains Tian. “[When] you need a ride, [when] you need information.” “Thank God we’re good-looking,” adds pal Jaree.

This is going to be fun.
