Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it received formal notice of a federal grand jury investigation into whether it broke immigration laws, after hundreds of cleaning-crew workers were arrested at its stores on immigration charges.

Sharon Weber, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman, said the company late Friday received a letter that said a grand jury was investigating whether Wal-Mart violated immigration laws in connection with the use of third-party floor-cleaning contractors.

Weber said no individual company employees had received target letters.

About 250 workers at 60 Wal-Mart stores across the country were arrested last month on immigration charges in an investigation into contractor cleaning crews.

Weber said hearings were expected to start in mid-December.
