Birds Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Two more dead birds in San Diego County have tested positive for the West Nile virus, bringing the total number of known cases to five, county officials said.

The dead birds, a sparrow found in an unincorporated area south of El Cajon and an American crow found in Valley Center, were collected by county vector control staff and sent to state officials last month for testing. In the last few weeks, three other dead birds have been found to be carrying the virus.

There have been no documented cases of the virus in humans in the county, but it has made more than 7,000 people sick nationwide, killing more than 150.
