* The average rate on 30-year mortgages rose to 5.98% from 5.94% the previous week, according to mortgage giant Freddie Mac. The rate for 15-year mortgages rose to 5.31%, from 5.26%. The rate for one-year adjustable mortgages, however, slipped to 3.73%, down from 3.74%.
