They Can’t Recall a More Frustrating Year

Coach Karl Dorrell had better hope that the UCLA football fan base does not include Congressman Darrell Issa.

So, we have an inexperienced coach, who seems to be in over his head. We have an offense that is so complex that we have to spoon-feed it to our players, yet so simple, opposing defenses are having no problems figuring out how to stop it.

I must have missed the story where Steve Lavin took over our football program.

Seriously, the worst thing about this disappointment of a season is that players such as Dave Ball, Rodney Leisle and Brandon Chillar are having amazing senior seasons go to waste, thanks to a completely inept offense and ridiculous offensive game plan.

Seven Bruin turnovers. Seven Cougar turnovers. One very ugly UCLA loss. If I wanted to watch an ugly program with a comedy of errors, I would’ve watched “America’s Funniest Videos” instead. And Bruin coaches? I think it’s about time to trudge back to the nearest Home Depot to reorder some new industrial-strength smoke machines and a boatload of mirrors.

Matt Moore is clearly separating himself from the rest of the Bruins. While his teammates are looking to earn a bowl game invitation, Moore talks about ending the season in two weeks. He also responded to his demotion by stating “it [stinks], but that’s the way it is.”

No, Moore, what stinks is your play and attitude. While Moore has been constantly whining, Drew Olson has displayed all the essentials of a team player and deserves the chance to lead the Bruins against Oregon.

Fumble, fumble, intercept.

Penalty, penalty. So inept.

Bruin offense has no rhyme or reason.

I’m glad it’s almost basketball season.

Boy, did T.J. Simers hit the nail on the head when writing about Karl Dorrell, a.k.a. Karl Dullard. Just imagine the interview Coach Dullard must have had with Athletic Director Dan Guerrero:

Guerrero: Why do you want the job?

Dullard: Nobody else wanted it. Why not me?

Guerrero: How will you motivate this inexperienced team?

Dullard: Just watch me on the sidelines. I’ll be so fired up, I won’t need to wave a towel.

Guerrero: Have you ever had a quarterback controversy?

Dullard: Never. I just flip a coin. Heads it’s Olson, tails it’s Moore. Works all the time.

Guerrero: Do you realize if you don’t beat USC this year, you will probably be looking for another job?

Dullard: (With great emotion) Must have been this interview that’s going to get me this job. Next coaching interview, I’ll be just as exciting. No big deal.

So, Karl Dorrell flip-flopped regarding this week’s starting quarterback. The important thing is that he changed his mind and went with Drew Olson, who has been 5-1 as a Bruin starter, while Matt Moore has foundered in returning. Give the coach credit for admitting a mistake and doing the right thing. Even Pete Carroll, now considered the second coming of Bud Wilkinson across town, stumbled during his first campaign. Give Karl a chance!

I am curious. When Steve Axman said that the Bruins were going to “mix it up” offensively against Washington State, did he mean punt the ball to the left and right of the field instead of down the middle? Or was he talking about the numerous fumbles and interceptions?

Kudos to Dan Guerrero for his decision to turn down the TV dollars and let the UCLA-Oregon game be played on Saturday afternoon. TV is the tail that wags the (NCAA football) dog and it’s refreshing to see someone stand up for the students and alums who want to attend the game at a decent hour.

I believe it was George Allen who said, “College football is a game that should be played at 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon and on the grass.” Alas, George is gone now, and I’m afraid his wish is history too.

Dan Guerrero chose not to move a game to a televised 7 p.m. start from a nontelevised 12:30 p.m. start? How can he think that college students would be more likely to wake up before 11:30, drive 30-plus minutes in weekend traffic, and then try to find parking before 12:30? He’s going to be lucky to get a half-full student section at kickoff.
