The mother of a man suspected of shooting and killing a Burbank police officer and wounding another officer was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of harboring or aiding her fugitive son, authorities said.
Loretta Garcia, mother of David Garcia, is one of more than 20 people who have been taken into custody during the search for the 19-year-old suspect.
The Garcias live in Los Angeles near the Burbank border.
According to authorities, Garcia and an accomplice opened fire on two police officers in a hotel parking lot after a routine traffic stop Saturday night, killing rookie Officer Matthew Pavelka and seriously wounding veteran Officer Gregory Campbell, 41.
The two officers returned fire and killed the accomplice, Ramon Aranda. The gunman believed to be Garcia escaped on foot.
